The gas storage project in the Shurijeh Reservoir is a 23-year BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) contract signed in 2020 between the MAPNA Group and the Iranian Gas Engineering and Development Company. This project aims to strengthen the gas supply network in the northern and northeastern regions of Iran and enhance energy supply security, particularly during the cold seasons. The plan involves storing gas during the first 8 months of the year and increasing gas extraction in the last 4 months to address gas shortages in the winter. The injection and production volume of natural gas is 2.250 billion cubic meters per year, with gas injected at a rate of 10 million cubic meters per day during warm months and produced at a rate of 20 million cubic meters per day during cold months.

The storage reservoir is an abandoned gas reservoir with an average depth of 2,600 meters from the surface, known as the Shurijeh D Reservoir, located in the Khangiran Gas Field. This field is situated 25 kilometers from the city of Sarakhs in northeastern Iran, near the Turkmenistan border. The first phase of this project, which shares similar capacity and facilities with the current project, was successfully carried out between 2010 and 2014 and is now fully operational. It is important to note that once the second phase becomes operational, the management of the first phase will be transferred to the MAPNA Group responsible for the second phase. Ultimately, both phases will function as a single, integrated unit.

The capital expenditure of this project is approximately 611 million euros, which is being conducted in partnership with the MAPNA Group and the National Development Fund of Iran. A significant portion of the upstream activities in this project involves drilling and completing 28 production and injection wells, while the midstream activities mainly include the construction of a pressure boosting station and gas processing facilities. In this Initiative, project management, supervision, control, coordination, reservoir management, and other related activities are being carried out by OGDC Company to ensure the successful execution of the project.
